It is a time to remember all of those who have lost their battle with breast cancer. It is also a time to remember that we must carry the torch to educate as many women as possible about the importance of self-awareness, annual screening, and support the cause.

Most people in the United States know a friend or family member who has been impacted by breast cancer.

The combination of mammography, regular breast exams by your health care professional, and awareness of changes in your breasts may be the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is more easily treated.

Women who are not at high risk of breast cancer should start breast cancer screening at age 40. Women at higher risk may be screened before age 40. Talk to your health care professional about the benefits and risks of mammography.

In the unfortunate event that breast cancer is found, we have options for helping with symptoms and side effects from breast cancer treatments. One side effect that many women do not expect is dyspareunia (painful intercourse).

Painful intercourse can occur due to chemotherapy treatments or estrogen-lowering and blocking therapies such as tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors. Any of these can decrease a woman’s estrogen production, leading to menopausal symptoms. In addition, breast cancer survivors cannot use conventional estrogen therapies. Women’s Clinic of Lincoln is happy to offer women and breast cancer patients an in-office treatment for relief of these painful symptoms.

The FemTouch is a non-surgical, non-pharmacological way to prevent and treat symptoms of vaginal dryness and atrophy.

Many of the current treatments for vaginal dryness and atrophy—when vaginal tissue becomes dry, thin and less elastic—involve topical hormone creams or hormone replacement therapies: this type of treatment isn’t recommended for women with breast cancer. FemTouch is an in-office treatment that does not involve any medications or hormones, making it a safe option for breast cancer patients.

When most people think of fall, they think football, pumpkin spice everything, sweaters, boots, and changing leaves.

We think, LASER TIME!

You see, in the summer, we shy away from doing laser treatments due to the high amount of sun exposure and the potential for less than desirable results. Fall brings a whole new season to skin care with the ability to use all of our lasers, high potency skin care, and chemical peels to reverse sun damage and aging.

Our favorite treatment for sun damaged skin is PiQo4 Laser by Lumenis for skin pigmentation removal. There are numerous types of skin pigmentation like brown spots from sun damage, age spots, freckles, birthmarks, and patchy brown areas caused by Melasma, a condition related to sun exposure and hormones. For some of these conditions, the pigment is very close to the surface of the skin and for others it is much deeper.

The PiQo4 laser uses energy specifically aimed at the brown spot of concern and delivers it so fast that the pigment is immediately shattered with minimal heat generated. This gives the PiQo4 laser an advantage over other lasers and devices where bulk heating of surrounding tissues can cause increased tissue injury and patient downtime, and occasionally paradoxical worsening of pigmentation, especially on darker skin.

We can also use the PiQo4 laser for Advanced Tattoo Removal!

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) can dramatically affect a woman’s comfort, confidence and quality of life. We are helping women reclaim their lives with a simple surgery called endometrial ablation. This is a safe, simple solution used by more than 2 million women since it was FDA-approved in 2001.

Don’t let a period stop you.

One in five women live with very heavy periods. Periods that get in the way of everyday life. Periods that keep you from the people you love and the things you enjoy. If you meet criteria determined by your healthcare provider, an endometrial ablation is a minor surgery that can lighten – or end your heavy period – without on-going pills and without hormonal side effects. For over 90% of women, menstrual bleeding is dramatically reduced or stopped. Maybe it’s time to step back into life. Talk to your healthcare provider today to see if this is an option for you!

As we age, our bodies will often go through changes. This can mean that beauty and health maintenance can require more attention and can cause some to feel less inclined to get involved with activities. As time passes, the work that you do to maintain good health can contribute massively to your quality of life down the road. If you want to have healthy skin, and a strong healthy heart, it will take some focused attention to strengthen your body. Take a look at these healthy aging tips.

Stay Hydrated

This one should be self -explanatory, but this is still a facet of health that a lot of people miss. If you aren’t properly hydrated, then your cells can’t perform the complex functions that they need to make new healthy cells to replace the cells that have been overworked. As you get older, you might notice a dramatic difference in the way your skin looks after a glass of water or two.

Eat Less Sugar and Saturated Fat

When fats are referenced in health as something to avoid, that usually means that they’re talking about saturated fats that can build up in the body and cause heart disease. When you eat less of those types of fats and limit the amount of sugar you eat in a month, you can see dramatic improvements in weight, and energy. Heavily processed sugar can also cause inflammation, which can lead to pain in the body, and swelling in crucial areas of your circulatory system. These bottlenecks in veins and arteries can be the road directly to a stroke or other events.

Stop smoking

Tobacco smoke contains toxins that can lead to smoker’s face. Signs of smoker’s face include dull and dry complexion, loss of skin’s firmness, premature lines and wrinkles, and leathery skin.

Eat healthy foods

A healthy diet promotes healthy skin. Make sure you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Get enough sleep

It’s called beauty rest for a reason. Sleep gives your body time to refresh and renew itself.

Adopt an Anti-Aging Skincare Regimen

Two products are an essential part of a healthy skin care regimen: sunscreen and vitamin A (retinol) derivatives.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen can dramatically improve the appearance and health of skin. It is designed to protect your skin from ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, which can cause direct and indirect cell and DNA damage. This results in degradation of collagen, an increase in pigment and a decrease in cell turnover. Ultimately, this results in signs of facial photoaging, lines, pigment changes and an overall unhealthy appearance to your skin. Daily use of sunscreen can diminish these signs. Additionally, its use can prevent skin cancers. Sunscreen should be used daily and reapplied throughout the day, rain or shine!

Vitamin A (retinol) and its derivatives, are powerful anti-aging ingredients. Retinoids, retinoic acid (Retin-A), tretinoins, retinaldehydes and retinyl esters are all in the vitamin A family. They help increase collagen content in the skin to decrease fine lines and increase cell turnover. Additionally, they can be used to treat acne by decreasing cell debris that can block pores. Retinols can, however, result in skin irritation, peeling or flakiness and sun sensitivity so it is important to use these products with sunscreen and under the care of your medical professional.

While sunscreen and vitamin A products are the biggest bang for your buck, there are many additional acids and antioxidants on the market which may improve your skin health. It is important to consult with your plastic surgeon to find the right regimen for you. Together, your skin care concerns can effectively be addressed.

Recipe of the Month:

Granny Smith apples are best when cooked, tossed into salads, and blended into juices. But there is another very important use of this tart fruit: Carving into Halloween monsters!

Quarter each apple, then cut a wedge out of the skin-side to create a mouth. Slather the inside with a smear of creamy peanut butter, stick sunflower seed teeth into the mouth, add a thinly sliced strawberry tongue, and stick 1-2 sugar eyes onto the “head” with a dot of peanut butter.
