Hands holding up various skincare product bottles for Advanced Skin + Body Lincoln Aesthetics & SpaSummertime brings vacation and fun in the sun, but it leaves a myriad of substances and chemicals on our skin. Sunscreen, sweat, chlorine, sea or lake water, bug spray, etc.—our summer habits could damage our delicate skin if we aren’t sure to abide by a healthy skincare routine. Follow a few simple steps to help protect and nourish your summertime skin!

Establish Your Skincare Routine

No matter what time of year, it is important to have an established skincare routine. Following it each day and night will keep your skin healthy and glowing for years to come. And remember, a general rule of thumb with your skincare routine is to apply products from thinnest to thickest, starting with your cleanser and moving toward your moisturizer.

Big Three

The three most important steps of your daily skincare routine are to cleanse, moisturize, and apply sunscreen.

Cleanse

Wash your face twice a day (morning and night) with a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type. Cleansing your skin rids it of dirt, oil, and debris, which can all cause irritation and breakouts. Additionally, washing your face helps to maintain a pH balance that supports hydration and cleans away grime that would interfere with the effectiveness of other products like moisturizers, serums, oils, etc.

Moisturize

Apply moisturizer both day and night. Preferably, use a daytime moisturizer that includes SPF and a thicker moisturizer at nighttime to replenish your skin’s protective barrier. Moisturizing helps to hydrate your skin, which becomes even more important as we age and lose some of our skin elasticity and ability to retain moisture.

There are three main categories of moisturizers: humectants (draw water), emollients (fill & smooth), and occlusives (create barrier). Humectants are especially good for dry skin. Emollients are soothing for irritated skin, like in the case of eczema or psoriasis. Occlusives, like humectants, are very good for dry skin, those with oily or acne-prone skin may want to steer clear.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the absolute most important step in your routine! Use at least a 30 SPF every day. We recommend mineral sunscreens over chemical, but either way, be sure to protect your skin from the damaging rays that cause premature signs of aging and skin cancer. Many daytime moisturizers will contain SPF, but for added protection, be sure to have an additional, facial skin-friendly SPF for fresh applications.

The Add-ons

If you stick to the simple cleanse, moisturize, and sunscreen routine, you’re already ahead of the game. But why not take your regimen a step further for added results?

Tone

Using a facial toner is a wonderful way to remove any excess debris or makeup, balance and hydrate your skin after cleansing, and prepare your skin to better absorb products. You can use it both day and night, but it’s best to ease into it. You’ll want to apply this after cleansing with a cotton pad or your hands. Healthline recommends avoiding toners that contain alcohol, fragrance, or witch hazel.

Mask

Okay, masks are not necessary, but they are a lot of fun! And the concentrated ingredients can give your skin a boost. There are a vast variety of face masks with different purposes and delivery methods. Be sure to read the instructions.

Open up your pores with warm water before you apply a mask and if you have any negative reaction, stop using immediately. There is some debate about what point in your routine to use a mask (and that can depend on the type of mask you are using). We tend to agree with Peach & Lily, who suggest using your mask after toner and before serum.

Serum

Serums have a higher concentration of nutrients than your cleanser or moisturizer can deliver. That’s why they are an excellent addition to your skincare routine. Typically, they will contain vitamins or botanicals that protect, hydrate, color-correct, or fight aging. Each product will have different instructions on frequency, so be sure to read them. However, for best results, apply a serum twice daily, before your moisturizer.

Eye Cream

Do you need an eye cream in addition to your moisturizer? Well, we highly recommend one! The skin around your eyes is more delicate than the skin on the rest of your face. Having something that is formulated for the eye area and can help with specific issues, like discoloration, puffiness, or dryness, is necessary in our eyes…get it?

Put your eye cream on before your moisturizer. Dab dots of product from your inner eye out, around to, and across your brow bone. Then, lightly tap (never rub!) the product into your skin and allow it to dry for a couple of minutes before moving on to your next step.

Oils

Oils are another lovely product that helps to balance and protect your skin. And they are so soothing. They are especially good if you are looking to up your skin’s hydration and for their anti-aging properties. You can also mix an oil in with your serum or moisturizer!

There is debate about when to apply your oil—before or after your moisturizer? We tend to think that your face oil works best to seal in all of your other products and protect your skin, therefore, we recommend putting it on last. But please, do your own research and decide for yourself! To apply, put a few drops in your palm and rub your hands together to warm the oil. Then, pat the oil gently onto your face.

What About Regular Facials?

You know what’s an even more amazing add-on? Getting regular facials! A facial is an intense, yet relaxing, pampering of your face that doesn’t skip a step. These are wonderful to work into your routine or to use in preparation for big events. Schedule a facial at our Lincoln, NE spa and clinic today!

Remember…

No routine is going to reveal results in a day. Though facials will show a certain amount of instant effects, every product needs time to display a change in your skin. “Generally, aim to use a product over at least six weeks, once or twice daily, to notice a difference,” the New York Times suggests.

Oh! And don’t forget to exfoliate one to two times per week in between the toning and serum steps! Choose either a chemical or a physical exfoliator. And there are lots of masks that have excellent exfoliant properties.

So, start creating your skincare routine today! Pick and choose the products and steps that are right for you and stick to your plan to see positive results written right on your skin. It is always a good time to begin making healthy decisions, but get on it now so you’re ready to battle the looming ravages of winter skin!
