Let’s be honest—it has not always been easy for a man to go to the spa for a treatment. He probably would have suffered endless ribbing from his mates and leery looks from his partner. Guess what? The times they are a-changin’. Aesthetic treatments are for everyone!
Perhaps it was due to the rise of social media, documenting every moment of our lives. Perhaps it’s because we’ve been staring at our own mugs on countless, poorly-lit Zoom calls over the last couple of years. Or perhaps it’s because we all gained a little weight during lockdown. No matter what the reason, the result is that men feel more comfortable getting the treatments they need to feel their best. And that is, frankly, fantastic!
With the help of 2020’s Plastic Surgery Statistics Report and Advanced Skin + Body Aesthetics’ observations over 2021, we’ve created this list of the seven most popular aesthetic treatments for men. Remember, never be embarrassed about taking care of yourself! (And contact us today to book your next treatment!)
BOTOX® is used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, Crow’s feet around the eyes, and forehead lines. It uses OnabotulinumtoxinA, a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum, injected under the skin to block the signal from the nerve to the muscle telling it to contract.
The appearance of lines on a man’s face has traditionally been thought to give him character. However, as we spend more time on dating sites, social media, and work into later and later years, why live with lines that you can do something about? Results last 3–4 months, and users swear by it.
2. Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing is a dream for fine lines and wrinkles, skin irregularities like scars relating to acne, sun damage, and enlarged pores. Men’s faces take the brunt of daily trauma whether from shaving, acne, sun, or ingrown hairs. Using a laser, and short bursts of light energy, to remove layers of damaged skin from the face can reveal the soft, healthy skin underneath.
Laser treatments last 30–120 minutes and some results are immediately visible. The effects of the treatment can last for years. This is not a painless procedure and you may have pink skin for up to a year, but your doctor will know how to keep you safe and comfortable, making the results well worth it.
3. Laser Hair Removal:
“The grooming industry of men is continuously growing, the need to remove unwanted hair has increased in areas like the back or the chest,” comments the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine (IAPAM). Laser hair removal can remove or minimize hair on the face, abdomen, knuckles, legs, underarms, buttocks, hands, and feet, as well as the back and chest.
The procedure is fast, efficient, and there’s minimal discomfort. The laser damages the hair root follicle, providing lasting effects. It usually takes about six treatments, one every 6–8 weeks, to get the desired results.
Facial fillers are made of a gel-like (typically a natural compound like hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite) substance that is injected under the skin to fill in facial lines and give volume and fullness to the face. They are used to restore volume to cheeks and underneath eyes, fill in and diminish lines around nose and mouth or on hands, and plump the lips. They can also improve the general symmetry of the face.
Fillers are especially effective for aging-related volume loss. Results last anywhere from 6–24 months. A little filler can help soften the signs of aging without eliminating those rugged features that give a man his natural studliness.
Microdermabrasion is a less invasive procedure than laser skin resurfacing but still yields serious results. Using an applicator with an abrasive surface, the outer layer of the skin is softly sanded away, encouraging the collagen effect and rejuvenating the skin. This procedure is targeted to diminish lines and wrinkles, treat acne and other scarring, and reduce enlarged pores.
There is practically no downtime with microdermabrasion, so you can get right back to work, and the session shouldn’t last more than an hour. Results are noticeable immediately and you’ll be able to come up with a plan with your aesthetician for maximum results and upkeep.
6. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment:
Platelet-rich plasma treatments utilize your own plasma to create a concentration that is then injected into the area for treatment. The most common uses are for hair loss, acne scarring, and facial rejuvenation.
“When it comes to using PRP for hair loss, the body creates an inflammatory response due to the treatment, which releases growth factors that stop the hair loss process.” You’ll see results in sometimes only a few days and they “will build over time,” according to IAPAM. Cosmetic PRP treatments, on the other hand, will show results in 3–6 weeks, and they will last for 1–2 years. Hydration and texture are vastly improved with this trendy and effective procedure.
7. Body Contouring/Sculpting
No matter how hard you work at the gym, there might still be problem areas that you can’t seem to get rid of—that’s where body contouring or sculpting comes in. Surgery is going to be the more invasive method of body contouring (tummy tuck or liposuction), but there are many non-invasive treatments to help achieve body sculpting goals. For instance, cryolipolysis, laser lipolysis, and radiofrequency lipolysis.
Cryolipolysis, best known as Cool Sculpting®, uses extremely low temperatures to destroy fat cells. Laser (Smartlipo®) and radiofrequency lipolysis (NuEra), in turn, utilize lasers and sound waves. These methods are often used to target stubborn pockets of fat that seem to only worsen with age, but they also help with cellulite and skin-tightening.
